What’s better than a weekend festival? A celebration that lasts all month, of course!
No matter when you visit Gatlinburg, TN this month, you can enjoy the festivities of Oktoberfest at Ober Gatlinburg. Situated high up in the Great Smoky Mountains, Ober Gatlinburg offers exciting events all year long, including the traditional German festival of food, drinks and much, much more.
From September 30 to October 31, visit Ober Gatlinburg to take part in one of its most famous and entertaining events. Try delicious Bavarian treats, drinks and traditional music that will get your feet tapping in no time. Everyone in your family/party will enjoy themselves at Oktoberfest this year! The festival, which is held in Munich, Germany each year, will make you feel like you are actually in Europe for the 201st anniversary of the event. You can see plenty of leiderhosen and hear traditional yodeling from the Bavarian Fun Makers Band; don’t be surprised if they try to pull you up on stage to take part in the fun. Of course, with the right amount of German adult beverages, you might start yodeling some tunes of your own!
While Oktoberfest has a long tradition in Germany, it enjoys a fairly long run in Gatlinburg as well. The original owners of the Heidelberg Castle operated a restaurant at Gatlinburg that celebrated the event each year, starting in the 1980s. In fact, some of the Bavarian Fun Makers Band played back then as well, making them a Gatlinburg musical institution.
Hungry for strudel? How about shnitzel and germanwursts? Then you need to take the aerial tramway up to Ober Gatlinburg, seven days per week, to try some new and time-honored Bavarian dishes. Even the pickiest eater in your family will find something fun to try at Oktoberfest. To take part in the fun, visit Ober Gatlinburg on Mondays through Thursday at 1 p.m., Fridays through Sundays at 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 pm. and 6 p.m. to take in the show.
When you have had your fill of yodeling, schnitzel and Bavarian beer, you can enjoy everything else that Ober Gatlinburg has to offer. At this time of year, the park is preparing for a busy skiing season. But until the first snows have fallen, you can enjoy the ice skating rink, the Alpine Slide, the Chair Swing, the Amaze’n Maze, Mini-Gold, a full arcade and the Wildlife Encounter. Sure, the weather is getting a bit chilly, but all you need is an extra sweater, a warm coat and perhaps a cup of hot chocolate to enjoy everything that the Ober has to offer. Just don’t forget to bring your camera along to capture the memories, as well as the gorgeous views from high above the city of Gatlinburg.
The Aerial Tramway runs from 9:30 a.m. to 7:20 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
